Just the mention of brain storming will send some people scurrying away like rats from a sinking ship. There is a perception that you will be put ‘on the spot’ and have to come up with some solution to a problem, and if you don’t you are going to look bad.
Well, that may be the case in some companies, but if it is, they are shooting themselves in the foot. So called “Brain Storming” sessions may be a great way for people to make their ideas heard, but they also may be a way to find out why things are the way they are, and why some things are best left alone. But if the carrot and stick is mostly just the stick, participation will be viewed as a potential path to career suicide.
Free thinking sessions or blue sky sessions should not be confused with brain storming, although blue sky thinking can be step one of the idea creation or improvement process. Blue sky thinking is taking all limits away from the group think. Anything goes in that phase, and in the next phase, most of these ideas do go. Consider the auto industry. A blue sky session might include flying vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, hovercraft, anti-gravity, maglev or a thousand other concepts. The paring down of ideas would reign in the ideas that are too far out, while retaining nuggets from some of those ideas that are practical and applicable today. Other ideas should not be discarded, but stored for review at a later date. Some of the more far fetched seeming ideas might contribute mightily for the current model, and then years later become practical in their own right.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all of this is strictly for business application either. Many of these concepts can easily convert to use in other applications.
What groups do you belong to that could use some new ideas or improvements on the current paradigm?
I am thinking, PTA, Scouting, Camera Club, Church groups, but what about something closer to home?
Like in your home; your family unit? Could you brainstorm over vacation plans, new car purchase, moving plans, etc?
Remember this can be one person, a couple, a family, a civic group or many others.
With meet-ups happening and getting organized on-line, this becomes even more convenient as brainstorming can be facilitated with on-line forums, chat-rooms or in Second Life. The concept of brainstorming, itself old as time, is evolving as people brainstorm about the very concept itself.
