Celebrities continue to hold the top spots of interest in our magazines, internet news, social media and otherwise. It seems a majority of the world is consistently checking in on Whitney Houston, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. Although, even as these celebs are grabbing our attention, it seems a great number of them are facing charges for: drunk driving, public intoxication and drug over doses. This, then leading to bouts of rehabilitation, for often times, numerous substances.
When it comes to celebrities, we often look to them for fashion tips, dining recommendations, music selections and sports picks. But are we allowing ourselves to model too much of what has become ridiculous celebrity behavior? These role models are abusing substances more than the average citizen, and in the public eye. Have celebs gone too far with abusing substances, or are we just trying to imitate role models that we probably shouldn’t be?
Lindsay Lohan: Known for her start in The Parent Trap, at age eleven, Lindsay Lohan has been a prime example of substance abuse in Hollywood. In 2007, Lohan was charged with a felony regarding posession of cocaine. In this same year, Lindsay Lohan was also charged and arrested for her second DUI (Drinking Under the Influence). By the end of 2007, the celebrity had attended three rehablitation programs, and lost several career projects in the midst of it all.
Nicole Richie: As the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey, this young celebrity has been in the spotlight for the past eight years. At the start of her mid-career, Richie was charged and arrested for being in possesion of heroine (2003). Only three short years later, the actress was arrested for failing a sobriety test; after being pulled over for suspected drunk driving.
Nicole Richie had also admitted to abusing Vicodin and marijuana while driving, as well as alcohol. In 2007 the actress was sentenced to jail. In an out of one drug and alcohol rehabilitation center after another, Richie is now the mother to two children, and has since stepped out of the spotlight.
Mark McGwire: Known for his series of grand slams, Mark McGwire has finally come clean about his excessive steroid use. Claiming the performance enhancing drugs had nothing to do with his homerun success streak, McGwire stated, “I hid it from everybody.”
Professional athletes, runway beauties and movie stars across the globe continue to make news headlines with their overdoses and drug and alcohol abuse. Our teenage girls want to be them, our college sons want to date them; but truly, the substance abuse of any other person should never been something to aspire to – celebrity or not.
